I finally got a chance to see Avatar yesterday.
I went to see it in 3D, this was the 1st film I have watched in 3D and I did have expectations of it. Most were lived up to :)
The story is familiar, an 'outsider' comes to a new land, learns about the locals, befriends some of them and is then seen to have betrayed them. And finally redeems themselves. This story has been done many times before and will undoubtedly be done again and again.
The story was very well executed, the characters were brilliantly cast and well acted. You really got a sense of what this world was about, and why the Na'vi love it so. You see the development of Jake from a somewhat arrogant marine into so much more. You get a real emotional connection to the characters which so many films attempt but fail at doing.
As for the 3D, I personally don't really see the huge thing about it, it was different but I suspect I would have loved the film just as much if I had watched it in 2D.
That said, the effects in this film were outstanding. I don't remember a single point in this film where I stopped and thought 'That was obviously animated'. The whole world has so much attention to detail and was constructed beautifully, I honestly forgot that this world came from the mind of Mr. James Cameron, but I am sure that was the intention and it obviously worked.
I am not surprised that this film has out grossed the previous Cameron film, Titanic, although I am somewhat surprised that Titanic held the spot for so long. The question now is, how long will this stay at #1? And will it be the next Cameron film to knock it out of this spot?
This is a film I would almost definitely buy a Blu-Ray player for, that and a very big TV. Unfortunately I have the money for neither so a DVD and my 19" PC screen will have to suffice. But buying it once it comes out is guaranteed.
My only concern for this is one word 'sequel' I sincerely hope that if there are any thoughts into the possibility of a sequel that this decision is not taken lightly, what I don't want to see is a whole spin off TV series, meaningless sequels and unknowns playing the characters. This film has set itself into the minds of its viewers, a sequel would have to be extremely good. I do hope that they leave it here though. Too many sequels are let down by only existing to make money.
I have talked for long enough here, so I will stop now. But I believe that this film lives up to the hype, there will always be nay-sayers who will find something to complain about, this film will be no different. But it gets 10/10 from me.
